Of HomeTheater-ing!

The art of setting up a home theater.

2011 August 18

A good friend left the country and sold most of his stuff before leaving. He sold me his Sony DAV-IS10 Home Theater System, a perfect replacement for my old Logitech Z-540s which never got to work properly with my TV, basically cuz’ it was never meant to do that.

So I decided to take this opportunity to finally make sure that everything I use my TV for gives me superb sound. I use my TV for 3 things: [1] Games on my Xbox 360, specially RockBand and the like, [2] Windows Media Center on my Laptop (series and movies), and [3] watching TV (duh).

It turned out that my crappy Sony Bravia (KDL32M3000) doesn’t have an Optical output. In fact, it doesn’t even have HDMI-out, only 2 HDMI-in ports and other old formats. So I had to put my engineer mind to work and after a lot of reading and some adapters I got from amazon, here’s my setup.

Basically the audio from the Xbox and the laptop is going TOSLINK to the DVA – to ensure 5.1 – and the video goes to my TV via HDMI, as usual. The Cable signal – which is analog btw – goes to the DVA via some old RCA. In the future when I get better cable, I’ll deal with that sound.
